Thor: Ragnarok already adapted some elements of the Planet Hulk storyline from the comics, but the MCU may be tackling a full-fledged Planet Hulk movie or series in the near future.Īs for The Leader, there's some evidence that he could appear in She-Hulk before going on to serve as the main villain of Captain America: New World Order. Episode 3 shows Banner leaving Earth aboard a Sakaarian ship, apparently returning to that world to settle some unfinished business from his gladiator days. Marvel is rumored to regain full control of the Hulk rights as soon as 2023 ( based on some clever Reddit sleuthing), and they even seem to be teasing what's next for the character via a subplot in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. That's why Hulk's story has instead played out in the Avengers movies and Thor: Ragnarok, and likely why Nelson has yet to reprise his role as The Leader. However, Marvel Studios has shied away from another solo Hulk film, in large part because Universal Pictures holds part of the film rights. The Incredible Hulk was no doubt laying the groundwork for a sequel with the tease of Sterns transforming into The Leader. The Return of the Leader in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Expect Nelson's character to look a bit different when he returns in Captain America: New World Order. After a cut on his forehead is exposed to Banner's irradiated blood, Sterns' head begins to swell and change. The film ends with Sterns trapped in storytelling limbo. Sterns is eventually strong-armed by General Ross into helping complete Emil Blonsky's transformation into the Abomination. He synthesizes Banner's blood, believing it holds the key to eliminating disease and unlocking humanity's full potential. But Sterns doesn't entirely share Banner's desire to eliminate the Hulk. This version of Sterns is actually Banner's ally - a cellular biologist helping the fugitive Banner seek a cure for his condition. Tim Blake Nelson plays a pre-transformation Samuel Sterns in the film. He's as smart as the Hulk is strong, making him easily among the most dangerous villains in the entire Marvel Universe.Ģ008's The Incredible Hulk set up The Leader as a future MCU villain. His exposure to gamma radiation boosted his intelligence exponentially. Whereas most Hulk villains try to prove themselves stronger than the Jade Giant, Samuel Sterns is very much the polar opposite to Bruce Banner. The Leader definitely qualifies as Hulk's main archnemesis. The individual heroes and their respective rogues galleries and mythologies thus take a backseat in favor of simply being the next installment of a "grander epic. The Leader: Who Is Tim Blake Nelson's Character? This has been a recurring problem in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it's definitely a consequence of so many of the MCU movies seeming like mere set-up for what comes next. Given that he was hired to be Captain America's equivalent to Superman's Doomsday or Batman's Bane, it's no surprise that actor Frank Grillo is disappointed in how poorly his character was handled. It was one of several divergences from the comics, and it's one that didn't exactly work in Crossbones' favor. It's ironic given that the conclusion of the story's source material was what made Crossbones into a big deal, yet his costumed persona had a mere 5 minutes of screen time before being unceremoniously killed off. Showing up in the beginning of Captain America: Civil War, Crossbones is essentially just a suicide bomber plot device to get the public to distrust the Avengers. Sadly, not much of this was used in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which failed to use Crossbones in a truly major way.īrock Rumlow only had a truly major role in two Marvel Studios films, and he only took the Crossbones identity in one of them. Afterward, he remained a major threat among the street-level heroes of the Marvel Universe, even working in Wilson Fisk's Thunderbolts team when the former Kingpin became mayor. Bucky Barnes would finally get his revenge when he - as the new Captain America - put Crossbones in critical condition. Even the psychic Professor X was unable to gain information out of him due to certain memories being erased. This assassination sent ripples throughout the heroic community of the Marvel Universe, though Crossbones would revel in his evil act.Įven after being beaten and tortured by the Winter Soldier and the violent Wolverine, Crossbones would still refuse to relent or submit to their demands. His biggest moment would come at the conclusion of the Civil War storyline in the comics, where he shot a surrendered Captain America in the shoulder. Having long been an ally of the Red Skull, it was here that he would begin a relationship with Red Skull's daughter Sin. A frequent foe of Captain America, he would really become a major threat in Ed Brubaker's run on the hero's book. Created by major Captain America scribe Mark Gruenwald and artist Kieron Dwyer, Brock Rumlow aka Crossbones debuted in Captain America #359.
